The best known secrets of summer

Let’s face it! The Indian summer is the most dreaded time of the year. The scorching sun, the sweat, the grime, the thirst! Oh and did I mention the sorry state of affairs at the vegetable market? Shriveled looking uninteresting vegetables! We are all low on energy and tempers are running high! Phewwww….

But life’s not all about hate! It’s not about dread! It’s about the smallest pleasures that make our time worthwhile! And summer too has its upsides! I am talking about the chilled glass of nimbu pani, I’m talking about the lazy afternoon naps, the sheer joy that a few drops of rain bring on a hot summer’s evening.

The theme for Shopo’s Saturday Superloot, is Summer’s Secret. But the secrets of Summer are known to all and yet they are secrets of a different kind. They are the secrets that make our life better in tiny little ways. They make the unbearable Indian summer worthwhile and beautiful.

These little secrets top my chart:

The magic of cotton: Nothing beats the heat more than light and airy cotton garments. They dry quickly and when the wind blows, it's like your very own air conditioning. Summer is an excellent excuse to wear all the wonderful cotton sarees that are available in India!

Lemon life savers: Squeeze half a lemon in a glass, add sugar and a bit of salt, pour cold water and mix. Throw in some ice cubes too! But avoid having anything cold right after coming in from the sun. Wait for some time. When the sun extracts every last ounce of energy from us, These lemon life savers is the only thing that makes me climb those last flight of stairs!

Hair help: Summer is not the time for showing off your mane. Don’t you hate it when hair gets sweaty and gets into your face? Sweep them away. Summer is the time for cool hair accessories.

Cut out the heat: Window blinds are a must during those sultry afternoons. Roman blinds, curtains, or Khus, shade your home from the sun.

Siesta time: The little afternoon naps during those lazy summer afternoons are not just inviting but also necessary. Do you know that in some hot countries offices remain closed for two hours in the afternoon to let everyone take a quick snooze!

The smell of summer: Last but not the least, summer is the time for being in water. Be it in the pool or bathing twice or thrice a day, water is the ultimate savior! And along with that, without a wide variety of aromas and fresh smelling perfumes, the summer experience is incomplete. Do not forget the goodness of fresh flowers! Bring some freshness into your home by keeping them close to the air conditioner or window.
