Trends: An ode to Fashion Bloggers

When we were young, apart from all the wonderful and valuable things that our elders taught us, we were also fed a whole lot of biased views and concepts. And one of them was that one should not be too involved with ones looks, clothes or spend too much time in front of the mirror. These were things that earned you the label “vain” or “shallow”. And though most of us did try our best to follow these principles and moved on to different areas of work, the tendencies remained. No matter how much we tried to portray ourselves as plain janes to the world, deep within, a lot of us were closet Carrie Bradshaws.

How many of you girls out there can cross your heart and say that you’ve never done the following: enjoyed shopping for clothes, dressing up, matching shoes and bags with your clothes, open the wardrobe door every other day and think “I have nothing to wear”, wish to lose weight (or gain), like to look beautiful in photos, never happy with your hair and the only reason you went for a family function was to dress up like a tart?

I wish I had this epiphany a few years earlier but I have come to the conclusion that it's time to come out of the closet! And this has come about because of some brilliant people out there who have elevated their sartorial obsessions into their life’s work! These inspiring individuals are called Fashion Bloggers. They have changed the face of fashion and the perception of fashionistas in the eyes of the world. They have transcended all labels.

I came across the first of these blogs some years ago, it was called What Katy Wore and since then I’ve been hooked. Katy has stopped blogging a few months back but I think you should check out her blog. It's one of the first generation fashion blogs. Everyday since then, I have been pontificating about starting my own and delaying it for reasons I just mentioned, scared of being labeled! But not anymore!

These people mix and match the stuff that they have in their wardrobe and create interesting new looks and then photograph themselves and share it with the rest of the world. It’s like creating new designs and patterns with clothes and accessories and sometimes this is achieved with ordinary and cheap thrifted stuff. You don’t have to spend millions to become fashionable, all you need is the perception and you I can create amazing fashion out of ordinary everyday stuff.  I wanted to highlight a few of my favourite blogs in this post. So, here goes:

These people take their fashion seriously and dedicate a lot of time and effort to their blogs which is why a new kind of social media has come to life. Have you come across Lookbook, Stylepile, Pose, Chicisimo or Chictopia yet? These are just like facebook where you can add friends, send messages and have a profile but only if you have a new outfit or look to show off every other day! It’s really a proof of the fact that fashion is now serious business. So the next time somebody walks in on you while you’re posing in front of the mirror for an imaginary photo shoot, don’t get embarrassed, better still, take it to the next level and join Lookbook or Stylepile and become a self proclaimed fashionista!

As for me, I've already started off in that direction. This could also be a great way to promote my jewelry! Here's my first attempt to photograph myself with the help of a tripod and self timer. The clothes which I am wearing are nothing special, just a few unmatched items from my wardrobe. This attempt was basically to understand the light conditions on my terrace and the placement of the camera. As for the poses and expressions, I really have to work on that!

Studio Bulletin: My online beads haul

Some of you might remember a post I wrote about jewelry findings sometime ago. Not long after that, someone read my post and got in touch with me. Thanks to Shopo’s Saturday Superloot, which is a giveaway in which I participated, where she found me! Widad Moral is a jewelry maker herself and stocks and retails jewelry findings apart from selling her amazing handmade jewelry on Shopo! She directed me to her Facebook page: Wee Craft Corner, from where I bought a load of amazing beads and findings! I’m so glad that you helped me out Widad, looking forward to more great stuff from you!

The best known secrets of summer

Let’s face it! The Indian summer is the most dreaded time of the year. The scorching sun, the sweat, the grime, the thirst! Oh and did I mention the sorry state of affairs at the vegetable market? Shriveled looking uninteresting vegetables! We are all low on energy and tempers are running high! Phewwww….

But life’s not all about hate! It’s not about dread! It’s about the smallest pleasures that make our time worthwhile! And summer too has its upsides! I am talking about the chilled glass of nimbu pani, I’m talking about the lazy afternoon naps, the sheer joy that a few drops of rain bring on a hot summer’s evening.

The theme for Shopo’s Saturday Superloot, is Summer’s Secret. But the secrets of Summer are known to all and yet they are secrets of a different kind. They are the secrets that make our life better in tiny little ways. They make the unbearable Indian summer worthwhile and beautiful.

These little secrets top my chart:

The magic of cotton: Nothing beats the heat more than light and airy cotton garments. They dry quickly and when the wind blows, it's like your very own air conditioning. Summer is an excellent excuse to wear all the wonderful cotton sarees that are available in India!

Lemon life savers: Squeeze half a lemon in a glass, add sugar and a bit of salt, pour cold water and mix. Throw in some ice cubes too! But avoid having anything cold right after coming in from the sun. Wait for some time. When the sun extracts every last ounce of energy from us, These lemon life savers is the only thing that makes me climb those last flight of stairs!

Hair help: Summer is not the time for showing off your mane. Don’t you hate it when hair gets sweaty and gets into your face? Sweep them away. Summer is the time for cool hair accessories.

Cut out the heat: Window blinds are a must during those sultry afternoons. Roman blinds, curtains, or Khus, shade your home from the sun.

Siesta time: The little afternoon naps during those lazy summer afternoons are not just inviting but also necessary. Do you know that in some hot countries offices remain closed for two hours in the afternoon to let everyone take a quick snooze!

The smell of summer: Last but not the least, summer is the time for being in water. Be it in the pool or bathing twice or thrice a day, water is the ultimate savior! And along with that, without a wide variety of aromas and fresh smelling perfumes, the summer experience is incomplete. Do not forget the goodness of fresh flowers! Bring some freshness into your home by keeping them close to the air conditioner or window.

Random: Finding the findings

I have been searching the internet for online beading and jewelry making resources for the past few days.

If you, like me, are a studio crafter based in India, then you would know the lack of good online supply shops (in India). Etsy and Artfire has the most vast and most beautiful collection of supplies and both these websites are based in the US. I also noticed that there were a good number of reliable supply websites in the US apart from Etsy and Artfire and was so jealous of all those who could order their beads and have it shipped to their doorstep for free!

Whereas for crafters based in India, Calcutta in my case, the shipping and import duties become too expensive, sometimes the shipping costs are more than the actual cost of the product!

Got me thinking. India is such a huge treasure trove of crafts and artisanal skills, it’s a shame that we should have to import our supply from the US. But on the other hand, if you are not based in Delhi, Jaipur or Agra, the three main cities for beads and jewelry findings, you have no other choice!

Why you ask? Let me explain. There are a number of websites in India as well for beads and jewelry findings but the catch is, they are designed for the western audience. They only sell and ship orders above 500 Dollars! I wrote to a few of them asking them if they would ship me a small consignment of beads but none of them responded! They were not ready to do business with domestic clients since their profit margins won’t be that high!

It’s a shame really! So when someone like me wants to buy beads or other supplies, I will either have to depend on local shops which stock very low quality supplies or pay a huge amount to buy and ship beads and findings from the west, which for all you know, has been exported from India. I wanted to list some of the Indian sites here so that Indian jewelers like me could browse through all of them and maybe request them to start selling domestic.

As for Etsy and Artfire sellers, I think even if I have to pay more I’ll prefer to buy from them. Reasons? 1) Huge variety 2) Good quality 3) Prompt and professional 4) Reliable.

Trends: The Assorted beads Multistrand necklace

Over the past few days I've been noticing a rising trend: The assorted beads multistrand necklace. It's everywhere, blogs, fashion magazines, shop windows and even on people! It's quite an interesting piece of jewelry to own, if you, like me, find yourself wanting to wear more than one necklace with an outfit! Well, then here is the perfect solution to that problem, don't choose, wear all of them together and create your very own signature piece that no one else owns. Here are a few of my favourite multistrands on the web:

This adorable multistrand bridal necklace is from Style Me Pretty. Staphanie's wedding necklace has become a hit with the blogging community. Here is the tutorial.

If you are big on bling, then check out this assorted chunky multistrand tutorial from Love Maegan's blog. Here is the Tutorial.

Another type that I really like is the assymetrical ribbon tie variety. It's easy to make and incorporate various styles and designs into this necklace. The one here is from Ruby Mines. Here is the Tutorial.

As for me, I am in the process of creating a few of my own. Will post the pictures as soon as they are ready!

Inspiration Board: Teal

Teal is the flavour of the month. I"ve been rediscovering this colour in a whole new way in the past couple of days! Honestly speaking, the word Teal is new to me as we always knew it as sea green. But whatever the name is, it's an amazing colour, soothing yet vivid, feels like Spring but announces the arrival of Summer. May the summer ahead be as cool as Teal. Amen!
